Regulations & Permits

A shellfish permit is required for the catch or removal of any shellfish.  Permits are available at the city or town hall which allow for the harvest of shellfish.

Massachusetts law states that each City or Town that borders coastal waters has the authority to control, regulate or prohibit the taking of any and all kinds of shellfish, eels and seaworms.  The City or Town shall appoint a person or persons qualified by training and experience in the field of shellfish management as Shellfish Constables.  They shall regulate, promote and manage the shellfisheries in the City or Town and initiate programs to enhance the value of such shellfishery.  They insure the enforcement of applicable regulations.

Protecting the public health as well as the protection of many species that come under the jurisdiction of the shellfish officer has been our many objective.  By assisting in he drafting of local management plants tailored to fit your towns needs and the input given by both State and Federal level, we continue to help to ensure that shellfishing remains a viable industry in Massachusetts.  These valuable marine resources, their habitats, and the shellfishing industry all support and are important components of the Commonwealth's economic viability, historic character and prestige.
